Hi Kathy,
I am glad that some districts are beginning to look at how they spend their money. In NYCDOE, I am not so hopeful. I sound critical but I really feel for District Admin in a way they in many cases have their marching orders and really have no choice but to "buy " the chosen "product" of the moment.

Love the comparison! It's so scary that the comparison probably hits a little to close to home! And there are so many programs, Like Renaissance Learning's "Accelerated Reader" and Accelerated everything else as well as the many skill, and drill/kill computerized programs that "studies" have show improve learning. I skoff(sp?) at these programs. But there is hope. My district has put a moratorium on buying anymore Acc. Rdr anything. They are analyzine the fifteen years of the investment in this industry for positive payoffs since the programs require more memory, bandwidth, and the newest of new computers. They want to be sure it's a worthwhile investment. I could have told them "no" years ago, but who ever asks the educators? There will have to be an analysis, no doubt by a paid outside, to come in an say "no that program does not do what it is supposed to do."

I sincerely hope you are wrong about the comparison of public housing to NCLB. Public housing all but destroyed urban life in many American cities. Point taken that education is too much of a "product" for profit in our present system that is more concerned with making money rather than educating children.

I think what I'm in the process of writing up in relation to my BLC07 talks might provide some indications of some ways you could go (i.e. different ways from what you're suggesting) to help convince your colleagues and superiors that they need to "lead form behind" and encourage others to share.

Take a look as things develop. I'm subscribed to your blog, and would be keen to see if anything changes in your attitude to "getting" certain people to do "certain" things.

You have some awesome ideas. I am waiting too for Michael Jordan to show me the money, for the third time. I don't feel so good this time though...my heart wasn't in it. It doesn't matter either, since I have changed jobs and schools. But still the affirmation is nice. Thanks for sharing. Sorry about the dog.

Nice points. I have been thinking about that post, and I wish I entitled it "Do you still think you can build walls around your garden?"

I think the development of the read/write web is revolutionary, and people who have a vested interested in the status quo of schooling are not going to embrace this change. Some will do it simply because they do not understand the breadth of the change and are re-enacting patterns of schooling out of habit. Both groups will try to maintain a static picture of "schooling," in the face of the possibilities.

Sometimes I'm reminded of a quote by Buckminster Fuller that went something like ""To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete." I wonder what the new model of schooling might be that would force monumental change by making existing schools irrelevant...
